The boost retard start and rate knobs are the little blue thinggies. They don't have any dial markings and they don't click when you turn them.

The "Rate" knob lets you set the boost retard from 0? to 2? per psi, up to a total of 20? of boost retard. Straight up is 1? per psi.

The "Start" knob lets you dial in at what psi you want the boost retard to start. There is a test point (TP) that you hook your digital voltmeter to. If you don't want the boost retard to start until 4 psi, you turn the start knob until the meter reads 4 volts.

The new units have a monitor LED that lights up when the unit is retarding from knock. The brightness of the LED is propotional to the amount of knock retard. The LED is installed in a socket, and can be removed for remote mounting

Version 2 has the Map Limiter circuit that works like an electronic check valve. This primarily for the tubo systems, but the JRSC kits can also use it.

Version 1 does not have the Map Limiter.

Both versions also have the adjustable timing curve.

Thanks. I got a hold of somebody at J&S and they basically told the same stuff. I have another question though. With the old units they didn't have the boost retard...I am not quite understanding something...if it is going to retard the timing if it senses detonation why would you need to manually retard the timing for boost? Is it just to keep it at a point where it never detonates and never has to retard the timing? I just wasn't sure.

The old J&S was a "reactive only" box that retarded timing only when it sensed a problem. The boost retard feature of the new Ultra Safeguard allows you to adjust the ignition retard in order to prevent knock from occurring in the first place. This way, you get the insurance of the J&S (retard when detonation is detected), but you also have the ability to adjust your timing curve to prevent knock from happening. If the J&S is detecting detonation and pulling the appropriate amount of timing, the engine will not be smooth.

An engine that never detonates will have a nice, smooth power curve. If you have one that is detonating, the J&S will retard the timing to prevent damage, but the result is a rough, jagged power curve since the J&S will be retarding the timing to save the engine. This is of course, much better than having detonation without a J&S at all and ending up with a rod sticking out the side of your block. smile

We learned that it takes more retard to make the knock go away than it would have taken to prevent it in the first place. Result? Knock control by itself will save your engine, but you won't make maximum power.

wow... so with an ultra safeguard you can replace a BTM and if I'm not mistaken you could tap those leads with a cheap voltmeter and have a boost gauge, no? wait, maybe I'm wrong. probably so.

I just had a couple questions about the unit. How do you hook it up? It uses the stock knock sensor to monitor?...you just hook it up near the ECU? I see you can get it with or without the knock sensor from them...is there any benefit with changing the knock sensor to theirs? Also I was wondering about the boost retard with the ultra unit...I saw the pic of the unit...is the control for the retard one of those little buttons on the actual unit? I didn't see any #s on the dials or anything so I wasn't sure. Last question us I saw the price for the ultra unit is like $595 does that come with any monitor at all or do you have to buy the monitor seperate?

I tried to call j&s and ask them all this stuff, but no one answered so I just wanted to see if anybody here knew. Thanks.
